CHICAGO – On January 21, 2010, The Honorable Young B. Kim was appointed to serve as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.   With this historic appointment, Judge Kim will become only the 22nd Asian American federal magistrate judge, and only the fourth Korean American federal judge of any kind in the history of the United States.

“We are proud that Young B. Kim, an active and supportive member of AABA for so many years, has been appointed as a federal magistrate judge in our federal court here in Chicago,” said Sharon A. Hwang, president of the Asian American Bar Association of Greater Chicago.  “We applaud the Court for this historic appointment of Young, who will become the first Asian American federal magistrate judge—and federal judge of any kind—sitting in the courts of the 7th Circuit.”

Young B. Kim has been an administrative law judge with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission since 2001.  He was formerly with the Office of the U.S. Attorney and an Assistant Public Defender.  Judge Kim was also a law clerk for Judge Charles Norgle of the Northern District of Illinois after receiving his law degree from Loyola University School of Law in Chicago in 1991.

AABA congratulates Judge Kim, a long-time active member of AABA, on his appointment.
