* Frank H. Wu is one of only three Asian American law school deans in the United States. He was previously the first Asian American law professor at Howard University in Washington, D.C., one of the nation's leading historically black schools (from 1995-2004). In 2004, Wu returned to his hometown of Detroit, Michigan to serve as the ninth Dean of Wayne State University Law School; he will be completing his tenure this academic year. In the 2008-2009 academic years, Wu will be a Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland and George Washington University.

Dean Wu also serves as a Trustee of Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., the only university in the United States serving primarily deaf and hard of hearing, and he became Vice-Chair of the Board in 2006. He has been an adjunct professor at Columbia University in New York, a visiting professor at the University of Michigan, and a teaching fellow at Stanford University in California. Wu also taught over several short periods at Deep Springs College, a highly-selective full-scholarship all-male liberal arts college which enrolls twenty-six students, located on a cattle ranch and alfalfa farm, near Death Valley in California’s High Desert.

“Yellow: Race in America Beyond Black and White,” argues for a new paradigm of civil rights that includes people of all backgrounds rather than relying on a black-white paradigm and that addresses forms of racial discrimination that are not obvious but subtle. (www.wikipedia.com)

Born in Cleveland, Ohio and the son of Chinese immigrants to the United States, Wu has made extensive media appearances, including on C-SPAN, and he has been a regular on the lecture circuit, coming to attention for his debates on affirmative action. Wu’s media appearances have included, “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “Now” with Bill Moyers, Lehrer “Newshour,” “O’Reilly Factor,” “Book Notes” with Brian Lamb, “Talk Back Live” on CNN, National Public Radio, Voice of America, FOX Movie Channel with George Takai, and the Al Franken show. He has also hosted episodes of the “Asian America” PBS-syndicated television show.  (Eneri Communications)

"Finding Iris Chang"on January 17, 2008

FROM AABA's PUBLIC SERVICE COMMITTEE:

Thank you to everyone who attended our event last Thursday, January 17, 2008.   We had a really strong turnout with at least 45 people braving the cold winter night for Paula Kamen's reading in downtown Chicago.  Paula began our event with a brief story of her relationship with Iris Chang and the reasons why she wrote "Finding Iris Chang."  She provided an opportunity to raise and discuss the meaningful issue of mental health awareness in the APA community through her personal friendship with Iris Chang and her discoveries afterward.

Joanna Su and Aruna Jha both from AASPI spoke about their organization and shared stories specific to lawyers.  They offered the opportunity for people to contact them and join them for an informal dinner afterwards.

Paula graciously signed books for attendees and continued to engage in one-on-one conversation.

Many thanks to the Public Service Committee for their work with this event with special mention to Myron Quon, Jude Soundararajan, and Jen Wu.

Members of the Public Service Committee also include:  Michael Cho, Karen Cheng, Kimberly Robinson, Steven Wu, Peter Yuh, Richard Lee,

I also welcome you to view Paula's opening comments about her book:

Workplace Enforcement and Immigration Seminar on November 14, 2007

What You Should Know About Workplace Enforcement and Immigration

Location: Northwestern University School of Law,
Thorne Auditorium Arthur Rubloff Building,
375 E Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60610

Date: November 14, 2007
Time: 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM

CLE: 7.25 Hours

Co-Sponsored by Federal Bar Association, Chicago Chapter and Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education

An estimated 12 million people live and work in the US illegally. As the immigration debate rages, the focus is on the so-called "illegals" but US employers are supplying the jobs. Since 1986, when Congress passed the Immigration Control and Reform Act (IRCA) it has been illegal to knowingly employ unauthorized workers. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is now the agency responsible for ensuring that employers comply with the law, and it has issued new priorities and regulations in workplace enforcement.

This program will focus on US employers and their role in the immigration issue. It will examine pitfalls that await an employer who seeks to comply with the law. It will also discuss the risks of employers who discriminate against workers because they appear foreign, who use subcontractors to avoid the reach of the law, who violate employment, criminal and other workplace laws.

The program will examine the civil and criminal tools that are being used against employers and investigate some of recent cases that have been brought against employers employing unauthorized workers.

Program Chair and Moderator: Margaret H. McCormick, Federal Bar Association, Board of Directors Chicago Chapter
